Descrizione: Focusing on the British 8th Army's initial phase of the Invasion of Sicily in 1943. This packet covers the two major airborne landings and the drive up the eastern coast of Sicily during the first week of the invasion.
Montgomery and Patton led their forces across the island to Messina but not without controversy.
Montgomery called for Operation Ladbroke, a glider based assault and capture of the Ponte Grande bridge, which spread gliders over a wide area. A small band of troops from these gliders did manage to take the bridge but ran out of ammunition before relief could arrive.
The second airborne assault, Operation Fustian, was intended to capture the Primosole bridge. Again, these airborne forces fought hard and well but couldn't hold the bridge until relief arrived. Monty's penchant for capturing bridges too far was seen during these trying days.
In both cases, the 8th Army did ultimately arrive and did finally capture the bridges but the airborne forces making the initial attempts paid a heavy toll.
Rules for glider assaults and parachute drops are provided for the scenarios that need them. The other battles included two SAS missions and good ground based combined arms battles.
