Suburbs became popular in the 19th and 20th centuries due to new qualities in road transport which enabled family sized housing commonly equipped with multiple rooms, and car storage. From that came the widespread beliefs that home ownership and individualism are the key to living the dream.
In Subtopia, a 1 - 4 player tile placement city building game with puzzle-like elements, you play as developers that work to create dream homes in an aspiring suburban paradise.
Your job requires you to connect the community by colonising previous living space with new houses, using the road networks embedded on the tiles to transform the land into endless sprawling suburbs.
On this fragmented suburbia, engage in controlling what tiles get developed, and what tiles don't. Turn the land into hilariously giant carparks with your commercial facilities, or lock the land up to create your own historic heritage site attractions. Specialize in your trade.
Control the competition, and cooperate with business partners. Negotiate with your fellow developers, make deals to trade land, or block them off your lawn entirely. You choose what tile to own and develop, and you choose which developer you want to work with.
Made up of fragmented land, building a homogenous suburban paradise is impossible, just as you will realize it is difficult for the tiles to fit together perfectly during gameplay. Triumph goes to those that own the most important parts of land, and those that dream of gold.
Create dream homes, and transform the land in a realistic experience simulating homogenous suburban expansion. Live the dream and attempt to create the suburban promised lands with a fresh new housing supply.
