In early 1811, Marshall Soult left Andalusia to support Massena's invasion of Portugal. The Allied command took the opportunity to attack the French forces besieging Cádiz. The expeditionary force achieved a tactical victory, but failed to relieve the siege of the city, that would go on until August 1812.
