IntroductionJotun (from Old Norse: jǫtunn, meaning “devourer” or “giant”) is a drawless territorial game for two players: Black and White. It is played on the hexes (cells) of an initially empty hexagonal board. The recommended board size is 5 cells per side, but boards of size 4 or 6 are also valid. Each player has access to a sufficient number of stackable pieces in their color.
Definitions:
A stack is a set of pieces of the same color located in the same cell. A single piece is also a stack.
The height of a stack is the number of pieces it contains.
The color of a stack is the color of its top piece.
The strength of a stack is the number of friendly pieces it contains, ignoring enemy pieces underneath (if any).
A group is a maximal set of connected stacks of the same color, height, and strength. A single stack is also a group.
Turns:Black plays first, then turns alternate. On your turn, do one of the following actions:
Place a stack of height 1 in your color on an empty cell adjacent to at least as many enemy stacks as friendly stacks.
Move a friendly stack to an empty cell by passing through empty cells or jumping over one or more aligned sequences of at least one friendly stack (with or without empty cells before or after each sequence), landing on an empty cell after each sequence, under the following conditions:
The minimal height among stacks adjacent to the origin cell must be greater than the minimal height among stacks adjacent to the destination cell.
If the moving stack was not adjacent to any friendly stack at the start, it may end adjacent to at least one friendly stack of equal or lower height.
Each time a stack is moved, this procedure is followed:
1. The stack moves in a straight line through all empty cells until it becomes adjacent to one or more friendly stacks, which it may jump over in sequence. After each jump, it must land on an empty cell adjacent to the opposite end of the sequence. The path may continue in this manner until reaching the destination cell.
2. On each first cell touched that is adjacent to a new friendly or enemy group, the following interactions are resolved in order:
Active: If it touches an enemy group of equal or lesser strength, it consumes the top piece of each stack in the group (only one is added beneath the moving stack). Then, if it becomes adjacent to friendly groups, they are fed by adding one piece on top of each.
Passive: If it becomes adjacent to an enemy stack with greater strength, that stack consumes its top piece (adding it beneath itself). Then, if that enemy stack is adjacent to allied groups, it feeds them by adding one piece on top of each.
Each group may be consumed or fed only once during the journey, and never both in the same cell. Consumption is resolved in ascending order of strength.
3. After advancing in a straight line at least once (whether or not interactions occurred), the stack may change direction if it touches the lowest adjacent friendly stack, and that stack is equal to or higher than the next lowest friendly stack in the new direction. It cannot touch again any stack it has stopped touching.
4. If the stack loses its top piece and changes color, the movement stops immediately. A moving stack cannot be completely consumed.
End of the game:The game ends when exactly one player cannot place or move any stacks. The winner is the player who controls more than half of the board, whether by occupying cells with friendly stacks or by controlling empty cells where the opponent cannot place.
To balance the game, before starting, the first player places a black stack of height 1 on an empty cell, and the second player chooses their side. This balancing method is known as the pie rule.
